A Holistic Approach to Bioengineering

Bioengineering refers to the use of plant material to stabilize soils on slopes.  A holistic approach to bioengineering incorporates the use of individual dormant un-rooted bundles of branches (live fascines), dormant unbundled branches (brush layering), and combinations with live transplanting and seeding.
The illustration at the bottom of the page depicts the combined use of these techniques for a single project.  Standards and details for the application are available in the SCS Engineering Handbook Chapter 18, and in the NRCS Riparian Corridor Restoration Handbook.

The above diagram depicts an example of how our bioengineering material can be used to stablize two slopes.  BioLogs® are used as a base on each slope.  The left slope is further stabilized with Live Fascines and Riparian Grass.  The right slope is stabilized with Live Stakes.
